The Light Weight Light House

The Light House that isn't a lighthouse, but instead a lightweight home, can be found in Melbourne (Australia) and is one of the latest attractive house designs to surface from the architecture-led Australian city. Designed by ARKit who specialise in prefabricated (ready made) residential and commercial architecture, the Light House serves as a holiday home for a family of five and their dog, and can be found in close proximity to a coastal inlet. With extraordinary design features such as its wonderful light-weightness, contemporary studio appearance and abundance of light capture, SATORI & SCOUT really do love the home.

The site where the Light House resides is relatively flat and sandy, and the final design offers a pared back, family-centric escape from city life for its home owners. Comprising of two bedrooms, one bathroom, open plan living spaces, and a kitchen and dining area, all aspects of the Light House's layout and interaction have been planned around the family's togetherness and the coastal environment. With a compact footprint, a linear kitchen allows for a large dining table and an expansive outdoor decked terrace provide for a really nice covered indoor / outdoor relationship, effectively double the living area of the home.

With an outdoor shower area to provide an opportunity to wash off from the beach before heading inside, not to cause the family any unwanted stress, and a bunk room that is complete with trundle beds to allow for the accommodation to sleep six, the home is a really great city-escape offering. Crafted from environmentally friendly materials that include western red cedar cladding, plywood and timber, and more various materialities, the home was completely pre-fabricated in the architect's workshop. Whilst SATORI & SCOUT absolutely love the design of this home (and the many benefits of prefabricated architecture), the image-consciousness of the setting allows for maximum privacy for the home and minimal adverse effect on the local trees, and its these two aspects that really make the house a home.
