The Epitome of Hygge: A Family Home

Hygge has most definitely become the new buzzword since 2016, amongst social media, the news, designers alike, and accordingly SATORI & SCOUT has no doubt in thinking that you will already know that it means 'cosy' (well, kind of).

As designed by Danish practice Norm Architects, this Norweigan home is complete with tens of beautiful and subtle 'cosy' areas that are each accentuated by the vastness in the otherwise open living areas and glazing surfaces. Set within a beautiful woodland landscape, The Glovik House (near Oslo, Norway), features various interconnected units that are so to create a naturally 'haphazard' layout. Within such an organic design, grey has been chosen as the colour of choice on all walls, whilst all textiles are equally earthy toned and all timber is positioned open to react with the natural elements. A fundamentally cosy ambience, is this home but the epitome of 'hygge'?

As Norm Architects explain, "...having thoroughly considered the climate in the process of designing the house, the idea behind the cluster style house was to give the home a cosy and inviting feel, where you can truly hibernate while taking shelter from the frigid days of Nordic winter. The modern cluster house gives you the sensation of being together, when not necessarily being in the same room, with thresholds defined by switching levels and materials. Beautifully blending in with its harsh yet peaceful surroundings - with its humble structure and cosy cubes - the house showcases the epitome of hygge." Featuring level changes, differing ceiling heights and dynamic enclosures, the movement about the home is certainly what makes it so interesting, and of course, SATORI & SCOUT totally agree with such a statement of great hygge-ness (okay, that isn't a word).
